Basically Chautauqua is a wonderful city located along the shores of a beautiful lake in Southwestern New York. But to many the meaning behind "Chautauqua" is what developed along this beautiful lake's shoreline in a grove of trees beginning in 1874. Chautauqua roots lie in peoples thirst for more knowledge.

Chautauqua (shah tau' qua) is said to be a Seneca Indian name meaning "Bag Tied in the Middle". Looking at the map shows the name fits the lake. It is 17.3 miles that offers some of the best fishing opportunities in the country

In the late 19th Century "Chautauqua" came to mean more than a place. It meant education, entertainment and culture. Before radio and television (and computers) especially for people of rural communities it became a connection to a wider world. In hundreds of communities throughout the US people waited all year to experience it. Now thanks to it's revitalization with a modern movement, people still do. The first Chautauqua held in 1874 on the shores of Lake Chautauqua in Western NY was born as a summer training camp for Sunday school teachers.
